statement of intent

For my final project I decided to carry out the research into sustainable design. More exactly, I’m eager to explore present examples of sustainability in the field of household appliances.
Nowadays we have a plenty of them made of different materials mostly plastic or steel. But the problem of choosing eco-friendly materials and power supply that is safe for nature is very relevant.

With development of technologies and people’s needs designers produced impressive variety of tools that make our life easier. But now it’s extremely important to find a way to improve and upgrade devices we got used to so that it was suitable not for people only but the environment in general.

By dint of profound research I’m going to design a household appliance that is safe, eco-friendly, ergonomic and meet the needs of selected target group. For the materials I’ll look through the up-to-date information and determine suitable way of solving the problem. Approximate list includes renewable materials and bioplastic.
For inspiration I mean to acquaint with works of J. Baldwin, Buckminster Fuller, Victor Papanek, also I intend to look through projects of design product contests organized by global leaders in home appliances, like Electrolux DesignLab.

For determination worlds tendencies and high-technologies internet will be extremely useful. As additional resources, sources of information and inspiration I plan to visit London museums including British museum and Design Museum. Bookstore Magma will be my extra source of books and magazines.

In addition to my principal research and project I’m interested in looking for information about the evolution of domestic appliances, its shape, functions and design. All the ideas and reflections I intend to record in my sketchbook as photos and sketches. During the London trip I’m also going to look for different stuff that could inspire me and lead onto the solving the problem I’ve chose.

For evaluation I chose self-reflective diary that I’ll keep during the final project, where I’ll write down step by step development of my ideas, its weak and strong points and the way of improvement. Also I count on guidance from my tutors and seek advice from colleagues.
